Welcome to our latest spot blog featuring Peter Grech of The SpaceMaker Interiors. We take a look at some of his recent projects and hear how he uses his love of travel, culture and beautiful spaces to influence his interior style.
With the notion of home at the centre of his designs he tells us how he uses Ted Todd floors to complement his work and create dream homes with a lived-in look specially curated for his client’s lifestyles.
Tell us a little about who you are and what your company specialises in.
I’m the director of SpaceMaker Interiors Ltd, an award-winning interior design firm specialising in high-end residential and boutique commercial spaces. We pride ourselves in developing a deep understanding of our client’s lifestyles, ambitions, and dream spaces. Armed with this information we proceed with formulating spaces filled with personality and character, with a contemporary approach to classic interiors. Our clients are drawn to our casual, lived-in style that allows them to seamlessly step back into their spaces and create memories within beautiful surroundings.
What were your main inspirations for getting into the industry?
Growing up in a very old house that had evolved over 400 years, we have endlessly been obsessed with the notion of home. Drawn principally to heritage homes and interested in the evolution and establishment of a space that we call home. That along with travel principally within Europe and the Far East has fuelled our love for beautiful spaces.
How would you describe your design style?
A contemporary approach to classic interiors is the short answer. The long answer is layered, cosy, homely, European, down to earth yet refined and elegant. A place where you can feel equally at home in jeans and a T-shirt, or cocktail attire. The spaces we create are move-in ready for our clients and take special notice of their lifestyle requirements.
Tell us more about your latest renovation project and your client’s expectations.
We have just completed a full home remodel on a gorgeous period property in the centre of Hale, Altrincham, Cheshire. This family home was well-loved, but needed updating and modernising. We worked hand in hand with the clients, architect and general contractor to deliver a home that whilst has been extensively remodelled, still feels very authentic to its period and its original use as a private art gallery.
Our client intended that the house felt very much lived in, and embraced the hand-made elements of artisanal products.
Tell us more about your renovation experience, what factors played a part when choosing the floor?
In the principal bedroom, we wanted to create a light and airy space that evoked memories of summer holidays by the beach, linen flowing in the breeze, and a calming breath of fresh air. The client had used Ted Todd floors in the past and was very happy with them so we knew they would be happy for us to specify them again. We needed an engineered oak floor so we set off exploring the options that Ted Todd had to offer.
Which Ted Todd floor was used in this project and what initially attracted you to this particular choice?
We used Kielder Planks from Ted Todd’s Classic Tones Collection in this project as the pale champagne wood tones worked perfectly without being too white, or golden. It had the right amount of character whilst still feeling polished and lovely underfoot.
Do you have any notable projects where you have specified Ted Todd floors?
We have used Ted Todd over many years, from our initial project where we inlaid it with a brass trim to our latest projects featuring antique flooring.
Any exciting projects that you’re currently working on?
As mentioned, we have recently worked on a full home renovation, formerly an art gallery in Cheshire and are now working on a renovation of a penthouse apartment within a former mill. We work from the very early conceptual stages with architects, all the way through to lighting, material finishes, custom furniture design, sourcing antiques, custom soft furnishings and window dressings, art selection and styling. Our next project involves using Kings Cross Jarrah, a reclaimed floor from Woodworks by Ted Todd’s Rare Finds collection which we are very excited to see down.
What do you like most about using Ted Todd flooring, and do you have a favourite product of ours?
We love using Ted Todd for its reliability, and ease of specification. We particularly love the antique and reclaimed wood flooring and are looking forward to using this in our upcoming projects.
